• The Gold American Eagle comes in four sizes, each with a corresponding face value:
  • One troy oz. – $50 face value
  • 1/2 oz. – $25 face value
  • 1/4 oz. – $10 face value

• On the obverse, the coin features an image of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty, with the U.S. Capitol          Building in the background.

• On the reverse, the coin features a design by sculptor Miley Busiek, depicting an eagle flying into a nest to join its family.

• The year of the minting is shown on the obverse. From 1986 to 1991, the year was shown in Roman numerals, while from 1992 onwards, the year was depicted in Arabic numbers.

Certified Gold American Eagles

Some of those who buy Gold American Eagles look for a certification. For newly minted coins, a certification would be redundant as the coins would almost certainly be in pristine condition.

A certification, however, may add value to older Gold American Eagles, especially those with proof finish, as these are not as widely produced as the BU coins.

Gold American Eagles are issued annually with the year stamped on the coin’s obverse. Their most popular years were 1986 when they were first issued, followed by 1997 and 1999. Gold American Eagles produced between those years are rarer, and therefore have a higher collectors’ value, particularly if they come in proof finish.

Certified Gold American Eagles are commonly assigned a grade of MS69 and MS70.
